culture is fluid and most people in the anthropology field don't even use the word "culture" anymore because it's such an abstract concept, you can't say one group of people has one culture. how do you even define what a society is? and what their culture should be? it's useless to try and do that and to box people up in that way

even the separation of africa/europe as two entirely different entities is such a 19th century concept. most people don't think of the mediterranean as one area but up until recently most people considered it as an area of society with shared practices, systems, etc.

i've even seen idiots here claiming that people from spain are "mayo crackers", meanwhile spain was largely arabic and jewish until the late 15th century when christians arrived, that's why so many people there are darker

idk i just think it's really idiotic how these days everyone is claiming certain "cultural" aspects as their own and shouting about how other people "aren't allowed" to take part in it. one typical example would be "greek culture" today. the greeks today are not the ones who inherited the greek legacy from the past as we imagine it. they are in the same spacial area as previous greek societies but for a long time greece was actually part of the ottomon empire, and the greek practices were instead passed on to arabic nations, who then influenced europe in much later years

a ton of greeks actually became muslim as part of the ottomon empire but when they gained their independence years later they had to essentially "make up" a culture for themselves so they started drawing on the imagined greek legacy instead of actual practices that had been passed down to themselves, while trying to minimize their real ottomon part of history

so yeah ideas of lineage coming from millennials on the internet desperate to feel like they're part of something are almost laughable because you can tell nobody has any idea of the actual politically constructed mythologies of lineage that are so present in society, as opposed to the actual vagueness of real lineage and "culture"

ik this is tl;dr but this always make me roll my eyes when people start yelling about these things. anyway if you want "anthropology through the looking glass" by michael herzfeld explains this a lot better than i can if you're interested

(Anonymous) 2015-12-13 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
oh nothing really, the papi thing just reminded me of this trend today where people try to hoard one "culture" for themselves and have no idea what they're talking about

(Anonymous) 2015-12-13 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
no wonder you're failing school [2]

that's nice

(Anonymous) 2015-12-13 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
ppl have just gone for too long without real srs shit to worry about + have gone through childhood being told "everyone is great and unique" + the current "everything is problematic" mood of academia/internet = the current mass of obtuse 'progressives'

(Anonymous) 2015-12-13 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
ia, a lot of aspects can be good like actually recognizing real problems and issues of inequality and systematic prejudices today but more and more it's been manifesting itself so negatively and nonsensically. seems like people just want to yell about something under the guise of "i'm being progressive" when they have no idea what they're yelling about

(Anonymous) 2015-12-13 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
ive seen the term 'regressive left' starting to gain traction in certain articles/discussion and tbh for a certain group of ppl it fits really well. ppl are so desperate to gain brownie points they dont realize the consequences of the shit they preach

(Anonymous) 2015-12-13 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
true it's really sad to see what "social justice" has become in recent years, people would rather yell about the latest tumblr sjw fad than actually educate themselves on issues

(Anonymous) 2015-12-13 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
idgi do you think dressing up as ~mexicans~ or whatever is not problematic?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-13 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
i think there's room for discussion with these types of issues, as opposed to this black and white "if you do X then you're a problematic monster"

(Anonymous) 2015-12-13 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
anon there's borrowing culture and then there's STEREOTYPING

(Anonymous) 2015-12-13 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
i'm not saying that particular incident (which i was not referring to in my post) doesn't have serious issues, i'm more talking about in general this black and white tone today is incredibly simple minded. i'm not really interested in discussing whatever shinee did i'm talking about this mindset on a larger scale really

eh i don't think there's room for discussion when it comes to what shinee did, or blackface or wearing headpieces

(Anonymous) 2015-12-13 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
that's your opinion, most people in this field would disagree but honestly it greatly depends on the nuances of the situation. clearly blackface is terrible but other "offenses" people make a stink about today are too much imo

(Anonymous) 2015-12-13 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
