"I'm really happy to see more young people getting involved," said Ms. Yumi Irie, who runs the handmade crafts website "Tetoi-to." She says that SAKURA, formerly of HKT48 and now a member of LE SSERAFIM, has had a huge influence.

Because of her, yarn has sold out at 100-yen shops, and even major craft stores like Yuzawaya have seen similar effects.

"Usually, knitting is popular in the winter and fades in the spring, but now it's already June, and the trend is still going strong. With the influence of SAKURA from LE SSERAFIM, there’s been a sudden increase in young people taking up crochet. Some are saying it’s no longer a seasonal trend but a full-blown boom."

The knitting community has long felt the effects of an aging demographic, but the entry of younger generations seems to be bringing new life to the industry.

We actually spoke with a 25-year-old woman who said she started knitting because of Miyawaki.

"I started crocheting because I love SAKURA-chan. I watch YouTube and TikTok to learn, and I’ve made drawstring pouches for earbuds and Tamagotchi. My mom, who’s in her 50s, makes acrylic scrubbies, coasters, and bags, so we’re both totally hooked. On my days off, if I have yarn, time, and energy, I can end up crocheting all day without even noticing".

“At Yuzawaya, we’ve stocked up on new summer knit products for spring and summer—please come check them out,” said Ms. Iitaka from Yuzawaya’s PR team.

"Young people who’ve never even touched yarn before come in holding a photo of Miyawaki on their phone asking, ‘Can I make this?’ This started around last autumn and is still happening. We’ve never seen anything like it."
