korea doesn't care about vocals tbh, if they did jay chang would be a successful idol instead of doing a new survival show every 6 months

they care to some extent imo. girl groups are more vulnerable to it than anyone bc they tend to get dumped quickly one way or another anyway.

ia about ggs but also 4th/5th bgs have been super critiqued though for not having standout vocals like 2nd/3rd gen - if jay had been from sm/hybe/jyp he'd be everywhere for his vocals but he's destined for nugudom

good vocals don’t guarantee success, but bad vocals do guarantee you’ll get flack at some point and prob won’t have longevity in the public

jay's problem is rather that he isn't korean. he should have persisted on trying to get into an agency tho, the way male trainees have now become rarefied he'd probably have a chance

i agree on one hand but then on the other you have taeyeon who can chuck out any song and stay in the top 10 for a year. she doesn't like to promote, she barely interacts with fans, snsd is on "hiatus", so why is she so popular if not for her vocals? same with iu although she's different from taeyeon in that everything about her is bland

taeyeon's popularity is thanks to a mix of beauty and talent though. that's why she wasn't overshadowed the way bada, luna, and wendy were in their groups
