i'm the anon who just got diagnosed yesterday so i'm still trying to figure things out myself and can't give much great advice. i think it probably depends a lot on what symptoms you have and what you struggle with. for example, one anon yesterday suggested using planners and writing everything down. but i thought that really wouldn't work for me because i already do that in other ways (e.g. use my work email calendar to plan my work, write lists) and it hasn't helped so far. i don't have trouble knowing or remembering what i need to do. i have difficulty starting things, and when i start i have trouble staying on task and not getting distracted by other things. just writing down on paper that i am supposed to be doing something isn't enough to convince my brain to actually do that thing. my dr did say that is common and that sometimes it is helpful to medicate so your brain can finally be available to try out CBT, coaching and other life management techniques for long-term management.

i looked at the planners that were suggested and i think it's different from writing lists and using online planners, because you see the 24 hours and the whole week at the same time. when you have bad working memory and executive function issues, you have to externalise those things. a detailed planner is supposed to help with starting things. just knowing it in your head is not enough. when you start cgt they will probably tell you the same as a lot of adhd related therapy is about planning. when you have trouble starting things, it's supposed to help to write down tasks in small steps in a time table. medication can help with starting things and prioritizing but for me the side effects are not worth it.

my work calendar is set up exactly like that - shows 5 working days of the week in half hour blocks so i can easily schedule different bits of work in throughout the day and see how much time i have left. like i said, it depends what you actually struggle with. i am sure for that anon (and maybe for you) it is extremely helpful to see your day planned out like that, but for me i see zero difference in the tools i already have at my disposal and use regularly. i used paper planners when i was younger and now i use digital ones, and none of that ever helped me actually start studying, start my assignments or start working.

your advice is that the advice you got doesn't work?
