iirc, the issue was unique listeners/buyers because the internal data explanation from melon was that the numbers exols put together differed from their internal data in terms fan-type consumption, ie mass streaming for the real time charts, vs gp-type consumption

nope, i was an army at the time and i don't remember it going down like that. most kpop stans got mad, not just exo stans, because it looked like melon clearly rigged it and their stance was grasping at straws by saying it was internal data. they said that their data was different and then when they released it, it showed that exo had more downloads and streams. up until that point i don't remember anyone mentioning uls with that award lol and i can even admit the gp wasn't listening to bts in 2016 like they are now

this is why i can't bring myself to care about these award shows after years of going through these processes, like if my faves get nominated or win that's great and i'm happy about it but after years of watching these shows change criteria up at the last minute or do whatever they want it's not worth trying to rationalize or argue about it
